About us

Students pack backpacks and hand them to people.

We are a student-run 501(c)(3). The bags hold food, toiletries, and clothing. We also point people to local service providers.

Backpack Project volunteers in green polos share a laugh outside before a distribution.

Our story

Started at UGA in 2015. Still run by students.

Zachary Leitz founded The Backpack Project at the University of Georgia in 2015. Students pack a backpack of food, clothes, and hygiene supplies and hand it to someone in person.

Students still run it. Chapters are on college campuses. In Athens, the chapter also brings hot meals and water to people living in encampments. Every November, company teams pack bags at Homeless Heroes Day in Atlanta.

In person

Why we deliver by hand.

Oftentimes, the greatest benefit of the backpack is not the goods inside, but the conversations we strike up with clients upon handoff.

William Ross, Chief Operating Officer, 2019 Year in Review

What we hold to

Three values.

Dignity

We ask people what they need and respect what they say.

Concrete help

Socks, food, toothpaste, a warm hat. Things a person can use today, plus the name of a local service.

Student leadership

Students run our chapters, plan our events, and lead the organization.

Donate

$25 packs one backpack.

Your gift buys the supplies. Students do the rest.
