About

In short.

The Backpack Project started at the University of Georgia in 2015. The Athens chapter, TBP/ATH, formed in 2019 and is run by UGA students.

Every week the chapter holds an event led by students that volunteers of any age can join. Besides packing backpacks, Athens cooks meals and hand-delivers them, with water and other supplies, to people living in encampments.

What we do

Programs.

Street outreach

Students hand-deliver meals and backpacks of food, toiletries, and other necessities. It is how the chapter gets to know the people it serves.

Saturday meals

Since 2019 the chapter has cooked and delivered meals every week. Water, bug spray, menstrual kits, clothing, and other items go out when people ask for them.

Backpack packing

Volunteers pack backpacks of food and necessities, chosen for the season.

Clean-ups

Volunteers help with local clean-ups.

Perspectives on Homelessness panel

The chapter has hosted a panel at UGA with speakers from ministry, nonprofit, recovery, medical, and government work in Athens.

Give

$25 packs one backpack.

Gifts named for a live chapter are honored. Starting chapters are funded through national until their own giving path is set up.
